A wastewater treatment plant designed and constructed as a unique raw sewage clarifying solution was ceremonially inaugurated in Ghana on 20 May 2021. The project is a significant milestone both for the Hungarian and Ghanaian party as it is the first water industrial development in the region implemented with the use of Hungarian technology and financing in Ghana.

At the ceremonial opening of the wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 1000 m3 a day, designed and constructed by the Hungarian Pureco-Unit Consortium and the Ghanaian Jospong Group of Companies, EXIM Hungary was represented by Szabó István Attila, Deputy CEO, Business Operations and Viktor Berki,  Director, Export Finance and Insurance.

EXIM Hungary, the Hungarian Export Credit Agency provided high-quality funding to the investment in the form of buyer credit, i.e. the bank granted credit to the Ghanaian contractor to ensure the implementation of the project, the success of the Hungarian consortium and a stable financial return.

The 150 lorries/day capacity water intake structure located on 22 thousand square metres improves the quality of life of nearly 2 million people.

The Ghanaian partnership does not end here; construction works of new sewage water treatment plants have started full steam in the cities of Tamale and Takoradi in Ghana. The realisation of the investment has also been supported by the Hungarian Export Credit Agency granting buyer credit.

The opening of the Kumasi wastewater treatment plant is an outstanding business achievement as it is the first purification plant constructed by Hungarians in Africa. The inauguration of the modern high-technology plant is national development project of particular importance from the point of view of wastewater treatment in Ghana and the improvement of the quality of life of the citizens. The investment will open up opportunities for further Hungarian projects in the country.
